My name is Amy Schmitz and I 'm a fifth year senior that will be graduating in Spring of 2009. I'm a Graphic Design major with Photography and Spanish minors. My overall experience at Stout has helped me learn who I am as an artist and designer. I enjoy working with nature as my main subject in most of my work. In terms of design, I enjoy pushing boundaries and drawing attention to whatever kind of project I'm putting work into. I tend to use a lot of color and pattern in m work. I also enjoy incorporating my photography skills into my art. There are endless possibilities for capturing time through photography. By utilizing these moments and visions in my art, I can express a feeling or an exact place in time. In the future, I'm very open to exploring the career opportunities that are out there. I want to do identity design, product design, and web design as the main areas of focus. I will pursue my photography as a hobby and hopefully be able to use that skill in my future endeavors.
The first pictures are from my Product and Packaging Design class. We had to create a series of three products. I designed an innovative shape of the package so the incense can seen and smelt by the consumer. The identity branding of the project was a challenge for me because I wanted to create a unique logo. I ended up sticking with a very simple two word logo. The pattern and design would have overpowered any complicated logo. I feel that this project was a huge step in my understanding of the graphic design world.
My second piece s located at the following address:

This was my final website for Advanced Computer Imagery. I did a Independent Study in Photography. My subject was water in any form: ice, fog, liquid, etc. Throughout the semester I collected thousands of photos from all around Dunn County. I really focussed on capturing what I was seeing at that moment. Detail was my main focus with most of the photography. By turning them into a small portfolio web site I was able to see the group as a whole. I learned a lot from Advanced Computer Imagery and dream to continue in this direction for my future.
My third piece is a little bit unrelated to my future as a Graphic Designer. This was my final piece for Sculpture 1. Conceptual sculpture was a whole new idea for me last year. I understand it mostly but struggled with my ideas for sculpture. I used my own photography skills and myself as a subject and created this piece. The overall concept had to do with feminism, self awareness, body image, manipulation, and the idea of playing a character in this world. I enjoyed creating the piece and aesthetically I find it to be very strong.

Amy- I really enjoy when graphic designs use few words as the main part of their design. I think words are so interesting and aesthetically appealing- so the Smell Me packaging attracts my attention. Looking back at your last sculpture piece and reading what you wrote I definitely see how that piece encapsulate you as an artist. It is full of color and pattern- it over took the room, hence definitely attracting our attention and the subject matter about self image, manipulation etc. but in the end focused on being the natural self.
Hey Amy,
First off, great work. I notice in all your pieces that color plays a huge role, and I really enjoy that aspect.
I'm very interested in the sculpture piece that you made. What brought you to revolve your sculpture around this subject of feminism, manipulation, and self awareness?
As for your packaging design for the incense, it's very creative and innovative. I always hate opening packages to be able to smell the incense inside. Ha ha. And I very much envy your website building skills. I learned how to get to Devil's Punchbowl and the other places of your site, which is very sweet, so thanks for that. About the photography on the site though, what made you want to do concentrate on water as your subject? I notice that you had a lot of movement in your shots, could that be part of the reason for using such a flowing element as water?
I'm taking package design right now, and I find the naming of a product interesting. I'm trying to figure out if the designer should choose a style first, then a name, or the name, then the style will come. The smell me was an interesting solution to this project.
After just getting 2 hours of sleep last night, what makes you love the field your in? (Because being an art major here obviously requires some dedication.) I find final products to be very satisfying after you've put in the long hours.
