Relationship

The previous photos are examples of my photography from the past year. I find so much beauty in nature and elements such as water and wind. The attention to detail and timing is key in capturing a moment that you see.

Photography and drawing have commonalities, yet the physical skill is totally opposite. Taking the energy and patience and putting it into a marking on paper is the challenge.  Instead of looking for a scene, the scene is the still body. I find it ironic that the aspects that I focus on so much in my photography is what I feel that I lack in my drawing. Showing the beauty of realism and paying great attention to detail can improve my future drawings.

Amy-
what commonalities do photography and drawing have to you?

I think drawing has got a bad rap in that it needs to be realistic to be considered good. I as well struggle with creating realism in my drawings, but finally realized in Drawing II that that idea is rubbish!

I think going back to the basics of drawing can be just as beautiful and just as intriguing as a realistic drawing. Elements such as line, shape, and form are lovely when left simply what they are (without the added detail) So all this is to say...maybe try simplifying the pictures you take with drawing only the basic lines, shape and form. I mean we have photography- so that is the most realistic picture we can see...why not try creating something someone hasn't seen?

Photography and drawing are both actions that capture a place in time. Whether the style and final image comes across as realistic or abstract that's for the artist to decide.

By training the brain to drop back a step while drawing, and to just focus on line, shape and form maybe the drawings will feel more realistic anyway.

I emphasize the unseen details in many of my photographs and plan to use that skill in my future drawings. What my eyes see through my camera can be caught and recorded with the click of the aperture. I need to slow down the space of time between my eyes and hand while trying to capture something with drawing.
