Rib Cage Drawing Analysis

By viewing a variety of artist's work I was able to see how they fit in the rib cage.  It wasn't too difficult to follow the sternum and find the egg because on the body of the men in the artwork the lines stood out.  I found this exercise to be helpful because using each different perspective gave a wide variety of options to learn from.

30 Minute Drawing Improvements

Throughout the first day of class, I began to realize how long it had been since I had drawn.  As I created my first 30 minute pose drawing I wanted to capture the whole figure.  I feel as though I accomplished that task.  I started the drawing with a very sketchy and messy style.  I think this is my way of compensating for the fact that I hadn't drawn in a long time.  The overall pose  I drew well, yet I didn't have any sense of drawing in axis lines.  The entire first drawing was in outline form.
In the second drawing, the pose was quite a different view.  I was straight on with the model and so I was able to really focus on the proportions and I began to attempt to draw in the axis line rather than an outline.  I still ended up outlining portions so I could visually place body parts.  I improved on the line quality and sense of scale in drawing two.  I think I was mentally more concerned about getting the axis lines and darks and lights in place rather than getting the details of the body on the page.
In the third drawing I believe I have made the most improvements.  The main focus was creating the curvature in the models spine.  Although it stands out to be a bit dark in the drawing, the proportion and curves are visually correct.  I enjoy how in this third drawing you can really note the axis lines, especially along the legs and back.  By creating more contrast along the right leg, it appears to be further in the foreground.
Generally, I think there is a great improvement in my patience and overall eye for figure drawing.  I'm looking forward to seeing my future progression and getting more detailed in the drawings.  My main concern is really being sure of proportion before continuing ahead in the drawing.  I often seem to find something major that I want to change in a later stage of my piece.  I'm going to work on taking the time to really look and carefully place the axis lines and value correctly.

Myself as a Designer

My name is Amy Schmitz and I 'm a fifth year senior that will be graduating in Spring of 2009.  I'm a Graphic Design major with Photography and Spanish minors.  My overall experience at Stout has helped me learn who I am as an artist and designer.  I enjoy working with nature as my main subject in most of my work.  In terms of design, I enjoy pushing boundaries and drawing attention to whatever kind of project I'm putting work into. I tend to use a lot of color and pattern in m work.  I also enjoy incorporating my photography skills into my art.  There are endless possibilities for capturing time through photography. By utilizing these moments and visions in my art, I can express a feeling or an exact place in time.   In the future, I'm very open to exploring the career opportunities that are out there.  I want to do identity design, product design, and web design as the main areas of focus. I will  pursue my photography as a hobby and hopefully be able to use that skill in my future endeavors.

The first pictures are from my Product and Packaging Design class.  We had to create a series of three products.  I designed an innovative shape of the package so the incense can seen and smelt by the consumer.  The identity branding of the project was a challenge for me because I wanted to create a unique logo.  I ended up sticking with a very simple two word logo. The pattern and design would have overpowered any complicated logo.  I feel that this project was a  huge step in my understanding of the graphic design world.

My second piece s located at the following address:

This was my final website for Advanced Computer Imagery. I did a Independent Study in Photography.  My subject was water in any form: ice, fog, liquid, etc. Throughout the semester I collected thousands of photos from all around Dunn County.  I really focussed on capturing what I was seeing at that moment.  Detail was my main focus with most of the photography.  By turning them into a small portfolio web site I was able to see the group as a whole.  I learned a lot from Advanced Computer Imagery and dream to continue in this direction for my future.

My third piece is a little bit unrelated to my future as a Graphic Designer.  This was my final piece for Sculpture 1.  Conceptual sculpture was a whole new idea for me last year.  I understand it mostly but struggled with my ideas for sculpture.  I used my own photography skills and myself as a subject and created this piece.  The overall concept had to do with feminism, self awareness, body image, manipulation, and the idea of playing a character in this world.  I enjoyed creating the piece and aesthetically I find it to be very strong.
